Post-op Services
You have had weight loss surgery, you have been examined by your surgeon……NOW WHAT?
If you have had weight loss surgery then you need to be followed by a medical doctor who understands the potential nutritional and health problems you will face as you lose weight. Your doctor needs to have experience in treating medical complications of bariatric surgery and must know how to prevent you from becoming sick. Dr. S.Y. Ghodsian is one of the few medical physicians that has this type of knowledge and experience. In fact, people from around the country who have had weight loss surgery use the services of Dr. S.Y. Ghodsian to maintain health and keep weight off, even if they continue to see their regular primary physician. Typically, your surgeon will examine you a few times after your surgery to ensure that no surgical problems have developed; then you need to see Dr. S.Y. Ghodsian who will follow you for the long run and give you comprehensive bariatric medical care. Typical post surgical health problems treated are: vitamin and mineral deficiencies, protein deficiency, swelling of legs, iron deficiency, anemia, bone loss and osteoporosis, nausea and vomiting, dehydration, diarrhea, dumping syndrome, unexplained fevers, inability to tolerate oral vitamins, excessive or inadequate weight loss.
In addition to keeping you healthy, Dr. S.Y. Ghodsian does not want you to be one of the many frustrated people who have had weight loss surgery and gained some or all of the weight back. Therefore, a key component of his program is making sure that your weight loss remains on track long after you have had surgery. Your weight is continuously monitored and nutritional and fitness counseling is given to you by Dr. S.Y. Ghodsian himself, not a nutritionist or an assistant. This program ensures that you lose the maximum amount of weight you can in a healthy and balanced manner. And for those patients who have had surgery and gained weight back, do not despair, there is hope! Dr. S.Y. Ghodsian routinely treats this type of a problem with great success, and with the support and tools he gives you, the weight can come back off and stay off!
Because obesity for many people also has a large psychological component, Dr. S.Y. Ghodsian personally intervenes and addresses the underlying psychological needs of his post bariatric patients such as depression, anxiety and poor self esteem. He believes that the long term success of any weight loss surgery is dependant on the state of mind of the patient. That is why he works with each patient, at each visit, to ensure that their emotional and motivational needs are met. Support group sessions are conducted multiple times per month where patients like you come together to discuss the issues that are affecting you.
Finally, patients with obesity many times also have preexisting medical problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, joint and back pain, asthma and obstructive sleep apnea. Dr. S.Y. Ghodsian monitors these conditions very carefully after your operation to make sure they have improved. As these conditions progressively improve, your medications will be adjusted to ensure that you are not medicated. For example, if you have diabetes, you will note that your blood sugar improves as you lose weight. Therefore, the dosage of insulin or pills you take for diabetes need to be cut accordingly to prevent you from having blood sugars that are dangerously low. It takes a physician specially trained in bariatric medicine, like Dr. S.Y. Ghodsian, to understand how to do this right.
Dr. S.Y. Ghodsian gives you the tools and support you need for a lifetime of healthy weight loss after your surgery!
